THE GLOBAL LEGAL HACKATHON 2019 ANNOUNCES FINALISTS

Following the virtual semi-finals, 12 teams have been selected to compete in the final round of the Global Legal Hackathon 2019 in New York City

The non-profit Global Legal Hackathon, now in its second year, has announced the 12 teams that have been invited to New York City on May 4th to compete in the final round of #GLH2019 – the world’s largest legal technology innovation event.

The first round of #GLH2019 began over the weekend of February 22-24, when over 6,000 legal industry innovators formed hundreds of teams in 46 host cities spread across 24 countries. They worked through the weekend to develop innovative, new technology solutions to legal industry challenges. At the conclusion of the weekend, a panel of local legal industry leaders in each city served as judges to select the winners that would represent each city or country in the global semi-final round.

Pierson Grider, Director of Market Development for Integra Ledger, which is the founder and organizer of the Global Legal Hackathon, commented, “We were really impressed with the quality of the teams and projects this year. In the first year of the GLH (2018), many people around the world weren’t even sure what a legal hackathon was. There was a learning curve. This year, it was obvious that more people knew what to expect and were able to take full advantage of the hackathon weekend to build amazing projects.”

After winning in their respective cities, each of the semi-finalist teams was encouraged to continue development their solution over the next several weeks, culminating in the submission of their project to a global panel of judges drawn from 13 countries.

Projects submitted to the judges for consideration in the global semi-final round covered a wide variety of use cases, each categorized as “Progressing the Business of Law” or “Facilitating Access of Justice”. Some examples of the video pitches of teams selected for the finals in New York City:

·      automatically draft complaints

·      machine learning in word documents

·      translation of legal documents

Reflecting the truly global nature of the event, the teams that the judges selected as finalists span the globe, representing South America, North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Here is the full list of the finalists with project descriptions:

At the Global Legal Hackathon 2019 Final Round Gala, which will take place on May 4th in New York City, the finalists will have the opportunity to make their final pitches and presentations, and a panel of international legal industry leaders will select two global winners from each of the private benefit and public benefit categories. Additionally, in honor of the launch of the GROWL Initiative (Global Rise of Women in LegalTech) at this year’s hackathon, one outstanding, women-led team from around the world will receive the prestigious GROWL Award – the first ever, for this new, global initiative.

David Fisher, the CEO of Integra Ledger and the co-founder of the Global Legal Hackathon, commented, “I had the opportunity to be on site in New York on the opening night of the hackathon. I then flew overnight to Amsterdam to spend the second day of the hackathon there, and I finished the weekend in London. It was truly inspiring to see teams hard at work in cities around the world and to witness the global phenomenon that that GLH has become. I can’t wait to see the final pitches in New York, and I look forward to the commercial launch of some of these projects, following in the footsteps of some of the amazing teams from GLH2018.”
