The Main Course: 5 Things That Made Me Think This Week

  • How Law Firm Libraries Can Create New Value: I've been fascinated by the work of law firm information professionals since having the good fortune of attending a regional event for law librarians several years ago. More and more, it becomes clear that this segment of the legal community has a powerful opportunity to influence the way legal professionals adopt/use new tools/methods. Ron Friedmann has some terrific thoughts on the topic.

  • Access to Algorithms: a really interesting academic piece (two terms not often connected: "interesting" and "academic piece") by Hannah Bloch-Wehba on using the Freedom of Information Act, and other transparency laws, to figure out just what the government is keeping inside those black box algorithms.

  • Explaining Elevate's Recent Acquisitions: Liam Brown digs beneath the headlines to describe the underlying strategy. Lots to unpack.

  • BYU Law Dean on Law School Innovation: they're up to all sorts of cool stuff in Utah, and Dean Gordon Smith is leading the efforts. Bob Ambrogi's interview is worth listening to.

  • The Reality of Collaboration: Jordan Furlong's take on how firms and law departments can better work together. This piece has a companion post, The Price of Collaboration, which is equally as worth checking out.

A Lagniappe

  • YKK, meet YCC and YQQ: the global zipper market is worth an estimated $25 billion (with a B) a year, with the firm YKK controlling 40% of it (check your pants collection and you'll see.). Turns out that there are others who want a piece of that sweet, sweet zipper market. This write-up on the industry is pretty fascinating.
